Any experiences with Freeservers.com? I'd like to hear, as I'm thinking of signing up. It's NetZeros' hosting service (not free, FYI).

I haven't heard anything bad about them, what type of web hosting service are you looking for? Shared or Dedicated?

Okay, it's time to come clean. Sorry about how long this is, but I think it's worth it.

I was looking for hosting multiple domain names, lots of bandwidth and la la la, everything we're all looking for.

The thing is, I already had an account with freeservers.com for a year (and I never published anything in that time) when I started this thread. I could've already had three domain names (virtual) hosted through my freeservers plan.

I just wanted to see how my current plan compared with what else was out there, if any of you had used them, and see if anyone had any experiences with them.

I had the standard deal, $120 annually for 750mb, cheaper than Moniker and comparable with other budget hosts.

Thing is, they're having a special going on that they're not advertising. I just called tech support for help - I wanted to change the domain name on my account to another name I had held at a different registrar - and after going through a quite lengthy discussion with this guy (Rich, I think his name was) about my options (he first told me to start a free acount under the new domain name, then transfer all my paid priveleges to that account) I realized that my best option was to close my acount (750mb @ 9.99 a month) and open a new account (1500mb @1.99 a month).

Not only would the new account be under the right domain name, but also I'd save $50.

All this because the standard $1.99 a month account is now being upgraded from 50mb to 1500 mb.

So... I hung up because my boss came back from lunch.

Next day, while the boss was at lunch I call the billing dept and cancel my 9.99 a month account, and they credit me $78 for the rest of the year. I then call the new accounts department and this guy named John tells me there is no 1500mb plan, and I basically screwed up by closing my account. I now have no host.

So, I go to lunch really angry.

I get back to work all ready to tear some CSR a new one, an Italian sub roiling in my tummy, and this lovely lady named Chelsea answers.

Chelsea tells me all about the Ultimate Plus plan (which for some reason they are not promoting on the website and that CSR John knew nothing about an hour previously) and sets me up with a new account with 1500mb / 50G transfer for $1.99 a month. 10 virtual domains from another registrar, 5 if registered with them, 500 pop email accounts, 50 additional forwarded email accounts. Sounded a lot better than the 750mb/3 domain/25 email account plan I had had, so I took it, and got $53 back for the year (remember I got a $78 refund when I cancelled).

This "upgrade" is only for new customers, and Chelsea told me that a lot of current customers are closing their accounts and opening new ones to get this deal. I don't know if it's a good deal or not, but I know it's better than what I was paying for (and not using). And she assured me that come renewal time the price will stay the same.

Maybe this is a standard host marketing tactic, but as a non-web consumer, I feel good about saving $50.

After I set up the new account I told Chelsea about my troublesome day and all she could say was, "Oh, yeah... That guy... Well, it depends on what tech you get when you call. I really shouldn't say anything else about him"

So, that's the story on Freeservers so far. If you talk to John, hang up and call back.
