I've been using a free FTP program (maybe that's my problem right there) and it's been working fine since I got it several months ago. The name is CoreFTPLite. Yesterday it loaded some files from my harddrive to my server as it usually does with no problems. Then later in my download session I turned off my brain and proceeded to shut down the program as it was transfering data. Now no matter what I do I can't get the darn thing to work again. When I click on the Quick Connect button the Connect window comes up with Hostname, User name, Password. I checked all that several times and it's all correct b/c I used the same info to log in to cpanel and it lets me in there just fine. Then I hit the Connect button and it trys to connect by saying:

/Connect socket #952 to 209.9......, port 21.../

but it doesn't and then I get the following joyful red message:
/Can't establish connection --> 209.9.....:21 @ Mon Aug 07 16:43:42 2006 (0-5)/

I've even tried changing the port to 22 and get the same type of results. I've also removed the program from my computer and reloaded it again. No luck, same thing.

Anyone know what might be the problem or perhaps better program to use?

I've always used CuteFTP and I find it to be fantastic! You can always just do it via IE too if you need. Not the best... but gets the job done when moving a few small files.

Ok i am a complete newbie trying to upload my first ever website.
I read instructions from web host and then proceeded to d/load filezilla which would not work and gave me 21 trojans, 2 exploit viruses and a downloader virus when i opened?/ All caught thankfully but then i d/loaded another program and it wouldn't work also?
I have no idea what to do when i actually get them open but as far as i can tell the ftp manager of my webhost doesn't upload files? is this correct?
So i need these programs too right?
First file must be called index.html and i think put into the public folder to be viewed???
As i said complete newby very confused any tips would be great

goldUFO, You could try reinstalling the software. That might help.

cathnniv, I've been using CuteFTP for several years and have found it good.

You'll need to check with you web host re the FTP manager and which directory to upload your files into. Different web hosts have different names for directory files.

You could upload a very simple page as a test. That's what I did when I first started.

Hi,

I too use and recommend CuteFTP.

I've tried loads of FTP programs and i think that
this is one of the simplest to use (and we all like simplicity, right?)

You could try creating a new ftp account username and password, using your cpanel, then input this new data into your ftp program. Also, are you sure you are not being blocked by your own firewall ?

Meanwhile you can use cpanel to upload pages to your site if you need to, until you get it sorted.

Hope this helps,

Robjean.

Hi cathnniv,

A few tips which might help you on your way.

You can upload your files (html pages) in two different ways.

- Through your admin panel at your host, if you use paid hosting this should be available.

- Through a ftp program, coffeecup provides a free one which works fine as well as the previously mentioned coreftp.

As for uploading through your admin panel, just find the link where it says file manager and you'll see the structure of your web site.

Your home page should be called either index.html or index.php and should be uploaded in the root directory which will be named public_html or something looking like name-www.

In the future you will probably combine the two different ways to upload and change your files.

How to set-up the ftp program:

Once you've installed your ftp program you will have to set-up your server details like the following.

You'll find a button "servers" click this and then click "add site".

Profile name: Your website name (not important)

Username / Password. Is provided by your host to log in to your admin panel. Check welcomes email

Hostname: www.mydomain.com (your website url)
Default folder: not needed

Proxyserver? No

That's it, you are now able to connect to your server and what you'll see is your root directory.

I hope this wasn't to confusing, you can always send a pm to ask for more info.

Harrold

Go with FireFTP all the way http://fireftp.mozdev.org/

I have some free tutorials on it at http://www.resource-website.com (in the HTML YouTube tutorials)

It works right in your browser, beats all the others (and I have tried almost all mentioned in this thread)
