A great way would be to write articles and submit it
to article directories to be picked up by publishers.
It requires a bit of work but is free and has great
results.

Bina, I agree your opinion.
To get indexed by major search engines that send massive surge targeted visitors to blog freely, blog needs hundreds of backlinks (at least 100) from websites that have high PR (Page Rank). Article marketing are good strategy to generates hundreds of backlinks and increase blog PR freely.
I found good tool that generates hundreds of backlinks by submission of article directories. And help blog owner to increase blog PR. This tool helps you save a lot of time and get the good result:

to promote a blog, do a lot of things, just as you would for a regular website. submit articles a week. send it to SEO and blog directories. to submit your blogs, here are a few sites you can look into that contain hundreds of blog directories:

post on forums, tag and ping, give something of value away, and create a google sitemap. there are a lot of things you can do to promote your blog, but remember to be consistent!

i'm no seo guru, but blog comment spamming is a bad practice that's been abused by plenty of users. In this practice, they'd simply leave a "comment" (or what looks like an "automatic" comment) under your blog post with a url back to their site, just for the sake of spreading their url around.
if you don't have a useful comment to say, then don't comment at all. I;ve encountered a lot of these comment spams and i could tell you it's SO annoying. you could tell it's just some software generated comment because i've had the same comment in all my other blogs - the url is just different. that's why i enabled some anti spam plug in in my wordpress. if you are interested about this topic you can go to

It's best that we try to put comments when we really have something to say or to ask question regarding the issues at hand. Good practice will benefits us in the long run.

blog comments do refresh the post that they are applied to so they do good. The problem is ofcourse the spam. You can set up a list of keywords that you dont want comments to contain, and that way prevent half the spam. The other part of the spam will not do any harm as latest version of wordpress has nofollow installed to all the URLs posted in comments, so your pagerank does not bleed from the comments. who cares if someone says that your blog is great and contains great stuff?

Personally, I find commenting a good way for backlinks (although i think i am out of the norm here for this post).
The key is relevant content with a comment. Some blog sites even include a way that they will link in the title of your last post. I LOVE commenting on those sites.
