I am wondering if optimizing a website is still relevant these days since no matter what you do, the search engines may not index you for about 9 months and finally when they do, you would not get any traffics.
It seems going offline to market would be more effective in driving traffics to a website.
What are your thoughts?
Can you share any SEO secrets that may be generating traffics for you?

I believe SEO is still alive and well. I have been online for 20 days with my website. I got indexed in 5 days following the plan in the tutorial that Allan Gardyne suggests.
http://www.associateprograms.com/articles/302/1/Free-Affiliate-Masters-Course
Quite simply I know got indexed by DMOZ.org or the two google rank 5 websites that gave me reciprocal links when I started. That reminds me that I should thank them for their help. I only got those high ranked links because I wrote a good email to them outlining how my website was related to theirs and how hard I was going to work to make my website as good or better than theirs over a period of time.
I generally like (off-page optimization) better than (on-page optimization). It seems to have much faster results. I have received a lot of traffic from SEO with article marketing though. I will continue to broaden my field with this. _________________ Unlocking the Adobe Expert in You!

You have a very valid question. Does SEO work. I had the same question and had the same doubts you had. The fact is SEO if used narrowly and short sighted wont work. But if you use it as a tool in a flexable online marketing campaign, it can result in dividends. Let me give you an example. I was contracted to optimize a sight for Chevrolet dealership in North Bay Ontario 4 months ago. I had never officially worked on a site for money just for friends and family. I thought logically with an eye for what google might look for and I studied what works online. Here is what i did:
1) picked a geographic keyword, in this case "North Bay used cars" since most sales leads online are for used cars. I also used "Ontario used cars"
2) Used those keywords in the title tags h1 and h3 tags. As well in the body of the main site.
- this is pretty common.
3) Restructured the navigational system so each page on the site has at least two links to it and the link title to the used car page is "north bay used cars"
- This also narrows down the customers to a local area which is a much more likly sales scenario.
4) Put togeather a list of my top 10 competitors list, and their back links. I soon found out that most links pages do not work. So I deal with main page links with my link partners.
-this is tough and is the hardest part for me it is slow and you have to send good emails, but its worth it.
5) I created a blog sponsered by the site www.truenorthlife.typepad.com. Basically it is a blog about life in Northern Ontario and I really enjoy writting about all kinds of topics.
6) I am starting to write articles and use rss but im in the early stages it looks promising.
I have done this for four months and google has ranked me number one for keywords i didnt expect like. "2007 Chevrolet HHR LS in ontario ". This is a top selling vehicle in stock so I did further on site optimization. The key is, online marketing is ongoing and evolving and companies need experts to compete for their products placements online.
Anyways, I hope I have answered your question. The site I optimized is http://www.truenorthchev.com. Oh The site traffic has doubled in the past 4 months so I think it does work, but it is no gimmick, its hard work.
Cheers

As previously stated you can have your site indexed under certain keywords in the search engines in a matter of days through article marketing. I've had my squidoo lens with the the subject "make money online surfing" on the first page of google a few days after I submitted an article to ezinearticles.com.
My website took about 4 months to have me #1 on MSN for it's main keyword. The trick is to use long tail keyword phrases. Approaching the situation in an indirect manner at first and then as your search engine rank increases you can zoom in on your primary keywords.
At least thats how it's worked or me thus far. _________________ Home Based Affiliate Business Ideas & Opportunities

IMO, Good content (info, service or product) + SEO + PPC, Paid back links, Forum posts to similar niche, banners, etc. = Great traffic and more targeted traffic!
IMO, opting for paid ways contribute well to a good marketing mix especially at getting targeted traffic. Drawing this traffic is just the first step, offering the right stuff to your visitors and conversion should be utmostly considered.
SEO is great for the long run and shouldn't be left out. Organic traffic from search engines would be best so long as you do the right steps in your SEO. This is a long process and wouldn't always give you immediate results. Premium ways (PPC, paid links, banner, etc) for faster generation of targeted traffic especially if you have time constraints in achieving certain goals. _________________ PR4 Link Directory

SEO is still important, but I question how important Page Rank from Google is. I just had a PR drop in Oct, yet I hit all time highs in unique visitors, page views, hits, newsletter subscribers and most importantly income.
I attribute that to being on page one of Google for more keywords as well as social bookamrking and blogging.
I do try and use good SEO practices on all blog articles and this is definetly helping me. _________________ Jeff Schuman

I have marketed online since 2005, which is relatively short time and I have a feeling, but no stats, that the chances to get organic traffic from the search engines has become more difficult, thanks to the fact that so many practises SEO.
That sets the right keyword selection into more important role, but however, profitable keywords can be found, maybe we need more of them to-day. So in my toolbox SEO is still number one together with the article distribution.

"Bart, Lisa you tried and you failed miserably, what did you learn?"
....... bart and lisa's responses......
Homer: "Never Try"
Let me help you with one very simple concept anyone who is making a full time living online as an Affiliate Marketer fully understands. THIS IS A BUSINESS.
It doesn't happen overnight. SEO is not just about what you do on your website.
If you want to succeed you have to do what it takes to succeed. And the proper design of a website includes SEO automatically.
Don't want to worry about SEO? Find a database driven Web Creation Platform like Drupal, Joomla, or Wordpress and take advantage of the SEO plug ins then focus on your message.
I see "Content is King" over and over... but what is content?
I believe most fail to understand the difference between Content and Content for a purpose.
Copying articles someone else has written is NOT content for a purpose. _________________ Join PepperJam Affiliate Network - $10 Instant Bonus JULY Only

Chasing for keywords is like running a small street corner stand, which sells what ever they managed to buy cheaply. Go there again after week or two and they have whole different set of items at sale.
These stands need traffic, that's why they locate at street corners or shopping malls etc. From the constant stream of passersby they manage to spot a customer or two, but they are all new customers. Repeat sales are seldom.
Analogy with PPC traffic generating sites is quite obvious, although internet is much bigger street than your ordinary main street at small town. _________________ http://www.ourdreamplan.com/
