The more you learn about affiliate marketing, the more you'll learn that there are many different ways of earning good revenue from affiliate commissions. I reckon the challenge is to create a business that suits your skills, interests and personality.
Yes, you could create a large number of affiliate sites, and spend years doing so.
On the other hand, you could create just ONE incredibly good, memorable, useful site that people talk about and recommend to their friends, and you could generate a very good living from that one site.
It's most definitely possible. I can tell you this from experience because I've created enough affiliate sites to be able to employ a bunch of full-tme employees and a few part-timers.
Or you might decide to create a small cluster of related sites. Strategically, this option makes a lot of sense to me because all the sites in your cluster can promote each other, and you can gradually expand over whatever time frame you choose.
Or - totally different - you can simply create a one or two-page site collecting email addresses for your chatty, friendly, useful newsletter, which keeps growing via word of mouth. Then you can put 90% of your time into promoting your very small site.
Or perhaps you could learn to do pay per click affiliate marketing, spending thousands of dollars a month in advertising to send visitors to carefully crafted landing pages, which earn you more than you spend.
I've nowhere near exhausted the available options yet. You're limited only by your knowledge and imagination.
My recommendation... Start small. Start slowly. Remember that you're building a business. Plumbers and carpenters and lawyers and affiliates all have a lot of stuff to learn. Start by building a simple site in a niche of your choice and regard it as serving your apprenticeship. That's a great quote Allan! Too many people think all they have to do is slap together a website and they'll be instantly raking in cash. Doesn't work that way.

And you'll most likely fall a few more times before you finally get the hang of it. $100 a day is totally achievable. There are lots of folks doing it.
I'm not there yet, but it's my short term goal - with $100 a day net profit I can quit my job.
That will be the real beginning - from then I'll be able to focus on making $200, $300 or $500 a day.
You can make $100 a day in many ways.
1 site can bring in $100 a day, or you could have 100 sites bringing $1 a day, or one site bringing in one $3000 sale a month - it's all the same result = $100 a day.
When you break it down that way, it becomes much more achievable and easier to set goals for.
A great guide I recommend is 5 Bucks a Day 'cos it breaks it down like this. Don't focus on the big number - look at the small numbers that will add up to the big.
If you climbed a mountain you wouldn't keep staring at the summit thinking about how far you've got to go. You'd look at the next small step, and the next small step after that.

You have gotten some terrific advice already. I feel the most important thing is to find a great product first. Find something that you yourself are interested in and would be proud to represent. Buy the product and do your due diligence ie. put in "product name + scam" in the search engine to look for any negative comments. Personally, I look for a product that pays a minimum of $20/transaction. Also, limit yourself to getting one product up and running before starting another. Let me quickly say you are on the best affiliate marketing forum so stick to this forum like a glue.
Regarding the starter package; I suggest you should visit the beginners page on this website. You have several options, the easiest being Adsense which was where I started from; you dictate how much you want to make with Adsense through your useful contents.
I had issues with the affiliate marketing until I visited Allan Gardyne website and BAM! I made my first $2.00 from affiliate marketing.

From your quote, I don't think anything in life comes easy, not even the air we breath because if you don't inhale and exhale, their is no way you could balance your living capability.
My point is; focus on what you like to do best and hit it from there. In my own case, again I started from adsense, walked my way to affiliate which was very tough for me. I called for help on this forum and I got so many response which helped me to start realizing some money from affiliate marketing.
Since I live in a commercial area of New York; I decided to make a flyer and tap into the resources that surrounds me which in fact worked out good for me. I gave out some hats and t-shirts as promotion at the most active location in Manhattan in New York (less than $1.00 each in New York wholesale market), and I collected tourist and residents contact information.
I sent out an introductory and welcome email to the contacts that signed up and a week after that, I sent them promotions and offers regarding what they indicated as their interest on my sign-up printed materials. Simple but effective! at least I was able to start from my area. If I don't do it, someone else willtap into it. Thar was how I got my first sale.
I later developed simple satelite sites using each of my unique Niche keywords.
In summary, read all about your options in this forum and sign up for the appropriate package through this forum, it will be your way of giving back to Allan Gardyne for this good forum.

Hopefully this is a goal that you can see. If not you may want to look into if this is really something that you not only believe in but are truly passionate about.
If you focus on what you like doing. Adapting to what works and making small changes to what doesn't, it shouldnt be long before you are seeing great results.
The advice and mentor ship here at this forum should also help out a great deal!
generating an actual income from affiliate marketing is definitely a realistic goal. It's achieved through hard work and persistence. You have to work hard, set short and long term goals.
