Hi

I want to ask any dads out there if they go to dad oriented sites like dadlabs.com or read any dad blogs.

I work in TV as a reality/entertainment Producer/Director and I have a quirky idea for a toy, gadget, fun site heavy on exclusive video as well as text that would appeal to dads..but I am not sure if any of the sites out there make any money. I can't imagine dads browsing dad sites at work..not cool, then at home aren't they more likely to look at sport, news and (late at night) adult stuff...or am I mistaken.

Personally i do check the numerous toy review sites and as a Dad often am the one in the family to actually make the purchases of toys, outdoor climbing frames, bikes etc but I find most of these sites are quite bland, low on good editorial and aimed at everyone.

Or..am I better to forget targeting Dads who might not ever visit and have a more general site aimed at mums and dads and therefore be less niche.

Great idea. Go for the targeted niche. My kids are almost all grown up, but I know for a fact that there are dads who are just like you! Coming up with something unique is part of being successful online.

Throughout my experience establishing a solid business venture on the internet, I can vouche for the fact that a niche market is more profitable than appealing to the masses. In one program I learned that the "shot gun" approach or appealing to the masses makes you lose money as oppossed to targeting and selecting an audience or niche market. Would you sell a car to someone who is looking for a truck to buy? And you would also keep selling other similar products to the niche market. More importantly you gain the trust of buyers in your niche market that will buy from you over and over again. I hope this will help you think about targeting and look at your niche market.
