There is a PRUNE facility that allows topics to be deleted after a set period if no resposes have been received. The subscriber can resubmit the topic immediately - there's no problem there.

My query is WHEN to prune. After how many days should the topic be deleted?

Now, my first attempt at a POLL - I hope it works!!

I don't think you should prune them. Since this board doesn't really have that much traffic and a lot of messages, you shouldn't have to worry about using too much space/bandwith. I'd keep them for reference and it also makes your board look much bigger than it is which is a good thing to have.

Also, having as little boards as possible is also a good thing for a message board when first starting Wink

I'd suggest a very long prune time, 2-3 years or more. If you look at borads like Jim's World, they have data going back years, all searchable which makes it very worthwhile for people to learn.

In view of the "results" of the Poll, however few, and a review of the Board as a whole, I have come to these conclusions.

Topics are generally healthy with good interaction and pruning will not yet begin - except for the "Blatantly promote your program here" forum.

A large number of these topics had no response and I have set them to delete after 20 days if no-one replies. I hope that meets with general approval. Some will be removed manually, if responses appear to be bogus.

Although I agree with comments that all visitors could register readily, and I recommend you all do, I will not enforce that as we do not have anyone with obvious disruptive intent. I will maintain a watch along those lines.

Enjoy your interaction - the new format is working well now.

As a new user of this Board, I like the fact that posts will not be pruned. It's both interesting and beneficial to have the ability to read through all of the topics and related comments...not to mention there is much to be learned. Smile

Hi,

I wouldn't prune either. Having a lot of topics is a good thing. People can search through them at any time, and find a lot of answers to there questions.

Sometimes a post is purely informational, and therefore requires no response. So it would be bad to prune a msg like that...

But some posts should be pruned. Maybe get a "manual pruner". Another mod who justs prunes out bogus/junk posts? Unless you want to do it...

It can be a useful mod exercise to run thru the forum weekly/monthly and scan for unanswered posts. A bump can prove useful, with an edit of the subject line or move to a different forum if appropriate.
