Al,

ALLAN is right that's it in a nutshell.. if you're new to it all...it could be worth the investment in your knowledge of reading thru a Book on SEO

i.e. Rankings Reveled or such.

There's some good posts in this forum about books for seo I'd check out.

You can go to different websites like seochat.com. You can share views with different experts.

As far as optimization is concerned, you can go to websites like ezinearticles.com to get latest articles on search engine optimization.

The best strategy is to :

a) Quality/related links towards your website.

b) Submit websites to different directories.

and several others ...

Something interesting to think about that is being brought up more and more. As Geotargeting and Personal Search increase (Google is pushing and testing both as are the other search engines) you'll need to create a new definition of SEO and "Ranking".

When you search for your own site you may appear on the "Top 10" results (meaning the 1st page for your search) but for the next person searching the EXACT SAME PHRASE (i.e. Kewords are identical) you may not appear at all.

Make chasing Search alogrithums seem kind of less and less important doesn't it?

You bring up a good point, however true personalized results are still some time away. While Google and others are using search history as indicators, they don't apply to everyone.

So for the foreseeable future their are 2 key factors to search engine placement - quality content and quality inbound links.

Of course you can control the content, and through this content you can also influence the inbound links.

There are really 2 schools of thought to modern link building and both are valid.

One is that great content builds links on its own. The other is that link building can be done without great content.

In other words, if you write good content, people will naturally want to link to it. If you can't do this, then you have to link build.

The thing to keep in mind, in terms of link building, is that it has to appear natural. That means you can't acquire too many links at a time, and you can't just have inbound links. Your link growth must appear natural.

Think of it in these terms - if you have a site that people want to link to, then you'll get links from a variety of sources and not just the exact same sites that link to your competitors. Also you need to link out to a few sites to keep the engines happy as this is, again, more natural.

If you can have a good balance of increasing content and steady growth in inbound links your rankings will improve.

I'm little bit confused. What does blogging refer to..."Do we need to create a blog ? Or Do we need to post in the blogs?"

"Blogging" is posting an article, or articles, on a blog. Yes, you need your own blog to be able to do this, unless someone has invited you to be a guest blogger on their blog.

One of the best strategies is, going for "long tail" keywords. They are not so competitive and you will have it easier to rank high for.
Also Latent Semantic Indexing will help you ("LSI").
that means, you use many keywords in the text, that are semantically related to your main phrase.

One way to bring traffic is to make our pages search engine friendly. Here are some tips I found useful:

1. Create keyword-rich pages
2. Name your pages using keywords relevant to the product sold
3. Offer your visitor a site map
4. Use relevant content
5. Eliminate clutter
6. Meta Tag must include your most relevant keyword phrases
7. Create dynamic pages rather than static HTML pages
8. Avoid tricks and deception

-there are many factors to rank well and you must understand them but:
* build web site without onpage optimization mistakes,
* links with anchor text rich in keywords,
* get a software to manage your links building,
* quality content can help but the most problem how to get quality content that encourage people to link to your web site: hire someone to write for you, it is huge investment, write quality content, you need to invest time and effort.
