I don't have SBI, but I'm reading the action guide and the Master's Affiliate course. The Search It! program is confusing me to death. I have keywords after keywords and no idea what the information is supposed to tell me. Is there an easier way to understand this information? _________________ Christina

Starting with brainstorming. Can someone explain the vertical & lateral brainstorming and the tools being used? I'm trying to create a master keyword list. I'm not sure how to weed out the ones I don't need and tell which ones are good. _________________ Christina

Hi Christina,
A vertical keyword phrase contains your concept keyword. If your site is about 'dogs' (far too broad) then keyword phrases like German Shepard dogs, Toy Dogs, Mongrel Dogs, How to Groom Dogs, are all vertical.
A lateral keyword phrase doesn't contain your concept keyword but is related to it. Kennels, Canine Distemper, Collar and Leash, are related.
You have to use a bit of judgment with lateral keyword phrases and decide whether they are really related to your topic.
As to telling which ones are good, again your own judgment comes into play. First you need to decide if the keyword phrase fits in with your site and that you can write about it.
A phrase with high demand may be good, but if the supply is also very high (often the case) it may be difficult to rank for.
A phrase with low demand and also low supply may be easy to rank but will not get a lot of visitors.
Like Goldilocks you have to find the keyword phrases that are just right, not too low a demand and not too high a supply.
Of course, there will be many phrases that, for example, have to high a supply but you need to have pages about them on your site.
