Some time ago, Allan mentioned newwebsite.com in one of his newsletters. It's a hosting service that allows you to pay one flat fee and set-up many mini-websites under the single hosting plan.

I understand that it's not a good idea to set up a number of minisites under a single IP address for the purpose of cross-linking among the sites.

But what about sites that don't link to each other. Is there any disadvantage to doing this - from a search engine perspective?

Thanks,
Bobby

The biggest problem is human investigation, but the jury's still out regarding cross-linking from close IPs affecting SE ranking algos.

Not that I know of.

Hope this helps,
Charlie.

I agree with Charlie. Independent sites, such as minisites, that are not meant to link to each other, are often set up on hosting plans such as you described. Many top gurus recommend using hosting in this way for multiple non-linked sites.

Concerning minisites that are cross-linked:

In another thread where Michael Campbell was being discussed, I read about this concern for human investigation. My first thought upon reading that was whether it's a realistic concern that search engines would assign someone to do that much investigation on someone considering the tens of millions of websites that are in existence.

If someone was making a lot of noise, I could see that happening, but I wonder how realistic it is after you get past the antecdotal examples?

I don't think it's likely, unless someone complained. The problem is, if they did, a human could check (and penalise) relatively easily. Besides, if you are really feeling paranoid, there is nothing to say that the SEs won't start checking this automatically at some point in the future.

When it comes to the free SEs, future-proofing your rankings as much as possible, seems like a good idea to me. The work involved to rebuild external linking structures (if you rely on them for Google), is not a pretty thought.

All the best,
Charlie.

GoogleGuy, who is apparently a Google employee, said in June this year that IP-based penalties are rare.

GoogleGuy said there were many reasons that penalties based on banning
IP addresses were not a good idea, and he hadn't seen one in a
long time.

I reported this in this my newsletter at the time:
http://www.AssociatePrograms.com/search/newsletter225.shtml

Therefore, it ought to be safe to have a number of sites hosted at NewWebsite.

On the other hand, it makes sense to look ahead and try to anticipate what the search engines are likely to do in the future. For that reason it would be a good idea to avoid using any linking structure that looks as though it might be artificially created purely for search engines.

It's impossible to get hard and fast rules on this stuff, so it makes sense to be cautious.

In my experience, you can safely link a small number of sites you own together, providing you also have external links to those sites.
