Here is how I get top 10 rankings for every single of my affiliate websites...
Ready? here are the 12 Steps:
Step A: High QUALITY Content... Help your visitors
and readers to solve their problems.
Step 1: Once you ave your main keyword, great. Now, just tape the keyword in Google, and check the top 10 sites. Look at their content, what are they doing? Is it a web 2,0 site, is it a blog? How many backlinks do they have?
Step 2: While you are there, grab every single keyword you can (from the title & "h" tags, from their descrption & keyword tags).
Step 2: Head over to about.com & Wikipedia. Check for your topic, and grab some of their keywords as well... http://www.spyfu.com will help
Step 3: Write A Single Page with your keyword, and some LSI (http://www.Kwbrowse.com) keyword as well. (it doesn't matter if you have the keywords in your domain name)
Step 4: Get some one way links to your site (from article directories & directories)
Step 5: With all the keywords you gathered above, write 10 articles (outsource if you can).
Step 6: Add a blog (I use wordpress) to your site on a new directory, and write articles every days for two months (Google will love it). Don't worry, wordpress has an auto posting feature.
Step 8: Submit articles with links to every single page of your site, not only the home page (most people do this mistake)
Step 9: Don't forget to get a sitemap with every single link of your site.
Step 10: If you can, add a membership or forum to your site. Why? Because Google will see that people come back again and again to your site, and hence, G will say that it's a good site (otherwise these people wouldn't return)
Step 11: Get one way links from authority sites like ebay.com, facebook.com. 43 things.com, work.com... All the site that Google like and admire.
Step 12: Submite a Press Release with links to your site (The SEO PR is more than $250, but it's worth it). Wait until you are profitable to do it.
NOTE: this works like a charm.

I recommend you use seodigger.com for keyword tracking, just trace your best competitors keywords and positions in SERP, they've done all the work allready .
