|
|
Starting an online business is very simple nowadays. But, making money is another story!
What I want to warn you about before you create your business is the simplicity of creating a free blog and start promoting your affiliate links in hope to make money.
Sure, this way you don't need a start up capital to invest in domain name, web hosting, products to sell, etc.... You don’t need programming, FTP skills or even how to upload your pages to the web.
The question here is: Are you sure to make money using a blog?
I have no objection to using blogs. Blogs are a good medium for businesses to promote their products, being indexed very fast, keeping constant contact with customers and potential customers, sharing thoughts, etc…
What I’m sure about is that blogs are not for every niche and you can’t make the money you want using only a blog.
To make sure you are in the right way click the link in my signature file bellow to read my recent post “Is Blogging a Wrong Way to Make a Living Online?”

I never got into blogging. Just thought it was not the best of matches with what I do online.

Blogging is not for me either. In fact I don't think that is the best way to go for most niches and most marketers.
Certainly some do very well with blogs, and they are a quick and easy way to get going, but quick and easy is not necessarily the way to success.
And then there is the task of making frequent posts that engage the reader, not something that many of us can do.
Just my thoughts. _________________ Why Do Most Affiliates Make Less Than $500 Per Month?

A blog is a good way to start and learn but a domian name and hosting is the best way to go. For the cost of a cup of star bucks coffee for a month you can get own domain name and hosting for a year.
If you wanted to start own business offline it would cost thousands so the small investment for own website is the best money spent. _________________ Surveys that pay

If you are building an authority site then a blog is part of what is needed today in my opinion. So is a website, landing page, and autoresponder.
I have found sales convert better on a web page than a blog page. Traffic is easier to get quicker via a blog post. So is getting on page one of Google and other search engines. They love a good blog post that is bookmarked to top directories like Stumbleupon, Digg, and Propeller.
Mini-Sites that are 1-5 pages do not need a blog and seem to do very well with pay per click advertising driving traffic to them. _________________ Jeff Schuman

Blogs are websites. And you don't need to add a blog to a website to make it successful any more than you need to have a website instead of a blog.
The best way to go is to pick the vehicle that best represents your marketing campaign.
In the right hands Blogging software can be configured to do just about anything.
There is so much misinformation and so many people making blanket statements about topics they really have little knowledge of.
Here is a very popular blog that ranks better than any website 99% of you will create.
http://www.jensense.com/
Here is a company that designs incredibly functional good looking blogs that will outrank and help you outsell your competition. No I am not an affiliate. I just know where to get good work done.
http://www.uniqueblogdesigns.com/
So the best TOOL for your Campaign (For those of you who actually have a business plan) is the one that fits your needs.
And you don't "Start a Business" just because you put affiliate links on a website or a blog.
If you want to start a REAL business. You make a business plan. You do marketing research. You test the hell out of your product or service before you commit a lot of your energy to the creation and implementation of your campaign.
Want to know if you can sell online? Create a simple landing page, crack open your wallet and spend $100 at on a PPC campaign. Test and track.
Real business pay taxes. And that includes having a license to do business. Paying Local and Federal Taxes within the REQUIRED deadlines. Including (If you are in the United States 15.3% FICA Tax).
Yes you owe FICA Tax on your earnings. And if you are even moderately successful you'll be in a 15% Income Tax bracket. And you pay Unemployment Tax to the State you live in.
When it's all said and done even a very moderate affiliate income will generate a tax liability of 35% off the top.
Sheese, I'm venting but I see so much crap online. _________________ FREE SEO and Keyword Suggestion Tools

Quest,
You said it all very well! I can't believe what I am reading on some forums these days, and AP seems to be leading the way. It is a shame. This forum used to be a becon of light in the AM/AP industry. This is no longer the case.

I agree with that 100% - for OTHER people.

Almost all of the people who I have met via local entrepreneur association have started their business based on their skills without anything more as their business plan than desire to be their own bosses.
Business plan is a good tool in pointing out few of the biggest problems, but soon it doesn't have much in common with work and daily tasks. Come to think of it, maybe business plans are mainly used to convince financiers than the actual entrepreneur.
But back to the topic, blogs are extremely work-intensive websites and as the closest equivalent from physical world I would pick suburban hair dressers. These work-intensive services have to work equally hard for money every single time. Only the most successful are able to make a big business out of it. Most are small business owners barely supporting themselves. Like many of you pointed out (in your own words), business set of mind will not focus to question "which one" but "what works". _________________ http://www.ourdreamplan.com/

Hi all
All what you have said is a good information that will help all of us finding the best way to make money online.
I'm not here to fluff you arround. I'm not promsing you anything. I posted about blogging to warn a lot of new business starters to not rely their business on blogs. I know very well what I'm talking about and most of you also do. According to their conceptions blogs are not a business solution for a brick and mortar business, or even an online business, but they can be a very powerful tool to help in many ways.
