Hi Marketers

Everywhere you look online, the advice of the "gurus" is to create
your own content. You need articles for your website, blog and
newsletter, special reports and mini-courses to grow your mailing list,
and your own product line including ebooks and audios.

That's an overwhelming amount of content if you're not a great writer!

What usually ends up happening is people spend months working on
just one ebook. Or they spend hundreds of dollars to have it written
for them by a professional writer.

Neither of these are great solutions. If you want to be successful online
you have to be able to complete content quickly and inexpensively....think about that for awhile..

Writing is like any other skill. The more you do it the better you will become. And write just like you speak, ignore the rules you learned in school. Steven King is no Cormac McCarthy but I'm betting he's got more dough.

Not every brilliant marketer is a good writer. Not everyone has great keyboard skills.

This is one reason why businesses outsource.

Are you a writer or a marketer?

Having a computer doesn't mean you'll make money. Perhaps your time would be best invested in an area where you don't need to write?

Maybe the online world is not for you?

Address your own proficiency early on and you'll save yourself a lot of wasted effort.

A writer.

I don't want to upset anyone here unnecessarily but I'll state the truth as I see it: if you wish to author a website then writing is a core skill.

You don't have to be a skilled polemicist, you don't have to have literary talent, you need not be a master of metaphor or a savant of simile.

But you do need to be able to articulate your thoughts, express them clearly and succinctly using the written word and occasionally adorn your prose with some wit in order to engage your audience. It helps if you have a handle on how to write copy which peaks a reader's interest, evokes excitement and can effectively call them to action. If you write for visitors with different reading styles (those who skim large print headlines, those who scan copy and those who read every last detail) you can simultaneously engage different audiences.

I'd be keen to read the thoughts of anyone who considers it possible to produce a website which performs well commercially without being well-written.

I'm not a brilliant writter, my spilling is terible, but i just want to give my opinion on things, form info to products, i have thought's feelings and opinions and i want to express them. I always write in a conversational style, but it depends on your approach. I review headphones, it's what i love doing, it's my passion, whether i'm good at it or not, I'm not quite sure, but i have had a few compliments o my reviews.

The way i got over my fear of 'how others would judge my writing skills' is by reading Make your content pre-sell, by Ken Evoy.

It has to be one of the most influential books I've read when it comes to creating content. I was influenced by the comments made by the site owners in the back of the ebook.

don't be nervous, just do it. you can always tweak things later, that's what Allan has told me to do. but to start just get some content up.

That's an excellent point.

Web pages are living documents - as opposed to magazine articles which documents frozen in time. So you can always put something online and polish it later.

It's just in my experience i'm not a great believer in keyword research. Now, i know i'm going to get some slap wrists for saying that, but in the case of headphonedeals.org, i had some 10 or so headphones before i started. I hung around 3 forums getting to know what people were after.

I have enough passion and experience of headphones to get started, then i let my stats tell me what people are searching for.

Now why do i say i don't use Keyword research?

because no keyword research tool has ever come up with this phrase:

princess leia Koss

now that i've started my....1,2,3,4, 5th site fakeheadphones.com (i won't put a link in) there were no keyword research tool gave me the keywords that are now pulling in traffic for me.

lets take http://www.keyworddiscovery.com/search.html a free keyword tool. This is what it came up with.

fake koss headphones 4
fake headphones 3
fake sennheiser headphones on ebay 2

here are the results for the free wordtracker tool.

http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/gtrends/?seed=fake+headphones&adult_filter=remove_offensive&suggest=Hit+Me

NOTHING! NOT A SINGLE SUGGESTION. and i thought wordtracker was supposed to be the bee's knee's Embarassed

this is form webmasters-toolkit.com

NOW, so Allan's forum doesn't receive anyone looking for fake headphones, I've put this page up on my blog

http://fakeheadphones.com/stats-page-for-all-you-marketers-out-there/04/2008/

So, tell me why I don't use keyword research tools
Question
I believe (and I'm waiting for the slap wrists to come) keyword research are for those kinda fly-by-night, types. the get rich quick crowd who know nothing about the stuff they are promoting, and have little chance of their site being a long term success.

Get into something you have a passion for, and get some content up, and let your traffic stats show you what words you should be optimizing for. stop wasting your money on ineffective keyword tools. And if you get no traffic what so ever, then that's great, because it tells you what ever you're doing is wrong. so do something about it.

for the most part, i understand that it's the sales page crowd that have a problem of optimnising. I say: Start a blog, talking about Pre-selling your product, and forget about PPC for your sales page. just create content, why, who, where and when someone is going to use your product, then link to your products sales page, and let the sales page close the deal, not start the conversion.

that's why i hate long sales page. By the time i've reached your sales page, all i want to know is one thing. How much?

if you moan because your sales page isn't converting, then shame on you. get off your rear, create some content on why i need your useless product, and then just tell me how much it is.

I don't need some nobody from Boston (no disrespect to Bostonites) with a site called www.mydoamin.com giving me some pathetic testimonials about your product. I'm having enough problems with feedback on fakeheadphones.com. Just because people are getting 100% feedback, they are buying from them, only to find the headphones are fake and a waste of money.

I don't care about them, i care about me!

waiting for my wrists to be slapped. go for it.

Well, you won't get a wrist-slapping from me.

Absolutely agree! Smile

Once you have a growing presence on the web, your stats and communication with your visitors will show you which areas of the site you need to develop and which new ideas you should explore developing.

Writing is something you can improve as you do more of it. Since people do access the internet for information it only makes sense that the better you are at giving it to them the better your chances are for traffic, repeat traffic, sales, and so on.

Plus search engines like fresh content so you may as well give that to them as well. If you will learn to write like you speak and make sure you have good grammar and spelling, you will do fine.

I think is must be really daunting if you are not comfortable with writing. I work as a journalist so I live and breathe writing and in my particular job I write for a newspaper where we write 4 stories a day (that's including doing the interviews, research etc.) and I write quick and punchy. I am doing a blog and I hope that regular, well-written content will attract more traffic.

What I will suggest is that even if you are not a natural writer, make sure your spelling etc is correct. Nothing makes me think a site is not worth looking at or tacky as much as bad spelling and use of language. Simple things like using it's and its correctly and lose and loose.

I haven't written any articles lately but I do remember that when I used to do this I would write some of my own, but there are also a number of different sites on the internet that will write content for you for a fee if you are not a good writer or just don't want to write.

What I do is go to one of these sites:

Guru.com
Elance.com
Getafreelancer.com

Post an offer to write 30 articles on a certain niche / theme, and then I get lots of bids from people that do this for a living.

I choose the best offer and within a few days I have a bunch of original articles (at a very low price).

Hiring a writer is good. There are also great content sources such as Infogoround.com that offfer private label right articles that are not over used. And you can touch them up a little to make them unique which does not take a lot of work or skill to do.
