Do links on the first page of your website drain your pagerank?

Let me explain my situation: Our site was in the top10 for a certain keyword. We then started to place some links on our homepage (our homepage has PR1) in exchange to some links on other PR1 pages. We now started to notice that we are not any longer in the top 10 for that keyword.

It was in a rather short period and the keyword is not commenly used, so we don't think all other sites have increased in PR.

Anyone having good/bad experience with links on the homepage of your site?

All advice very welcome!

Page Rank is not Site Rank. So any time you introduce an outgoing link from a page you dilute the pagerank. But pagerank is a measure or indicator and not the culprit in ranking.

The culprit is you are now telling Google that there are more important things on this page (The outgoing links/sites you are "voting" for).

It's a good practice to limit the external links on your homepage and to think about your PAGE not your SITE each time you place an external link to anything.

Many people place links in sidebars not thinking about the effect they will have on your site.

So the answer is YES... you are diluting your ranking, but not because of page rank.

Agree and disagree. PR does not go away because you link to another site, the other sites you link to just get less juice. So if you link to 9 sites, they each get 1/9th or so and if you link to 10 they all get 1/10th.

Also, that doesn't have anything to do with you ranking for that keyword. Sites usually rank higher for a bit when updated and then begin to drop. Its normal, just keep getting links from good relevant sites.

Your PR will get back and level out over time.

More importantly you shouldn't exchange links - no on a big scale at least. Never use scripts to do link exchanges for you - Google frowns upon that.

As for your situation I don't think that placing a link had anything to do with your PR dropping. For lower PR's it does fluctuate over time. As long as you keep building links it will level back out, I can guarantee you that.

Try and restrict the amount of outbound links if your site is still young. If you have to have outbound links, make sure they are to authority sites in your niche.

Also keep in mind that Page Rank is not just about backlinks - it takes a lot of factors into account.

To increase your page rank, you should have quality backlinks.. To have backlinks, you should:

Submit to site directories
Submit with your site’s name using your keywords, and then you could be ranked more highly on Google for those keywords, which means more traffic.

Joining Communities
Joining forums is a great way to promote your service and to network. If you become an active member in forums you can use your reputation to promote your website. Many forums receive large amounts of traffic and people pay attention to well respected members with high post counts.

Submit your blog to search engines
Most people get the majority of their traffic from search engines. When people search for your keyword and find your site or blog, there’s more traffic.

Writing articles
Writing articles is a great, free way to promote your online business, and can bring in a substantial number of targeted customers to your site, usually within a few days. The key is to submit your article to as many databases and directories as possible.

It looks like you have been leaking your pagerank to some other sites, but if you are able to build backlinks from sites with high Google pagerank everything should get better.
