Hello everyone! My name is Josh and I am new to both forums and affiliates.

In the past I have done a few affiliate pages but had no luck getting traffic to our sites so we had to take them down. We had great content, layouts, good affiliate links, just a few main keywords, no spam?etc. We have never been successful getting on yahoo or google and we tried every few months or so. We used to be listed on MSN, hotbot, Overture, altavista, and a few other SE?s but all at one time our sites basically disappeared off every search engine and we can?t figure out why. I am currently working on another page but I don?t want the same thing to happen to it.

Has anyone else had this or something similar happen to them? If anyone has any tips for me that would be much appreciated.

Thanks for everyone?s time,

Josh

Hi Josh

A site will not get into Google if it does not have any links pointed to it. If you did have links to the site then it sounds like you are very unlucky. Weird things can happen with search engines but the golden rule is to stick at it, it usually works out in the end.

Google discovers new sites by following links to them from sites it already knows about.

The way I got my sites indexed by Google was to pay Yahoo! to review my sites and put them in the Yahoo! directory. This meant that the next time Yahoo! was checked out by Google it found a link to my site and folllowed it resulting in my content being indexed.

You must be patient because it can take months for Google to index your site these days even with a few good links. It also can take over a year before you rank well for all the keywords you've optimized for.

So in conclusion you need a few links to get off the ground. You might be able to swing free links from www.dmoz.org or www.goguides.org and you can of course pay for possible inclusion into Yahoo!

Also posting on message boards like this with your link in your signature can put links out there to your site.

Anyway hope that helps

Best regards

Thanks for the tips Rupert.

I did not know that. So you're saying I need to be linked from other sites that are already listed on google to my site in order to get on google? If I don't, is there some back door around this?

Thanks again,

Josh

Hello Josh.

As far as I understand it, you don't need external links to get listed on Google, it just helps a great deal.

You can submit your site to Google manually, it's just that the Google spiders prefer to find you by themselves (from other links).

One way is to create a site map and submit that to Google. Then the spider can follow the links to your other pages. A sort of "find it themselves compromise".

Hope this helps,
Charlie.

Yes Charlie is right you don't need external links but they are very important.

I didn't want to mislead you but in my experience even after 4 months my sites weren't spidered when there were no incoming links. After being accepted into Yahoo! I was spidered and started ranking within 6 weeks.

If you go to http://www.google.com/ads/ and get a pay per click account, then choose your keywords to bid on.

Once your listings are online, which is immediatley, you will start to find your results in google.

Then go to overture http://www.content.overture.com/d/advertisers/p/bjump/?o=UCJ&b=10 and do the same thing, though this time make sure after you have picked your keywords you want to bid on, that your bid for each keyword is in the top 3 bids.

Being in the top three bids at overure = your listing will also show up in search results at other programs.

Make sure the page you build is rich in the keywords you have bid on and have a page that is heavy in text.

Mitch

Do other search sites use Overture results, or are Overture results only shown at Overture.com?

Overture states that their listings appear in Yahoo, Lycos, MSN, AltaVista,
and InfoSpace. Shocked

Rene,

I think they do. I recall reading someplace that those SEs use Overature if they don't have enough content to return to the user. So if you do a search for a term that MSN has very few pages on, MSN might look to Overture for more results.

Hope this helps!
