Hi All,
Looking for some input from your experiences.
When searching for keywords you can search with quotes around it or without quotes. And the numbers returned by google are drastically different for each.
I realize that with quotes does an exact match.
In your experience, what do internet users generally use? With quotes or without quotes? What numbers do you use to determine the keywords to use?
I am trying to figure out which keywords I want to pick for my first site concept and don't know what to do.

I've asked this question on other boards and by far the answer has been without quotes. Now, how you optimize your page for your keyword phrase without quotes I have no idea. Maybe someone more experienced can answer that one.

If your trying to find out what your competition is, go to google or altavista and do a search on your keywords and examine the results.
Try to determine how many sites are optimized for your keyword phrase. I'd start by looking for your keyword phrase in the title of their page to give you an indication if a page is optimized or not.
I hope this helps

Yes, I think that is generally accepted to be true.

Putting the search term in quotes simply checks that the words in the search term appear in that order and adjacently. So aren't the results just a subset of the unquoted ones, even if the order is altered by other factors, such as incoming links?
If you are struggling with keywords, SBI! is very good at leading you by the hand through the research and development phase. The brainstorming tools of the manager, though not perfect, are very comprehensive. It's also worth cross-checking with Wordtracker - as Scott suggests - which can be "hired" for as little as a day, should you choose.
Hope this helps,

Hi Khushee,
Nigel here, I have to agree with the others - "" are not needed
No searcher really puts them when searching, also when you create keywords do not use them, just commers to brake words up.
go to any search engine/browser and type a "keyword"-see what happens & then do some more searches on the results that you found. _________________ With Regards,
