As a rule of thumb, when is an image size considered to be too big in terms of how long it takes to download the file? Is there a size that you should stay under in order to keep page loading time to a minimum?

thanks!

Rule of thumb ... take your page size, script sizes if any, and size of all images on the page ... add them up ... can you stay under 50k? Yes? Good ... can you stay under 40? Better ... can you stay under 30K? Much better ... you get the idea Wink The smaller the page size the better, optimize the images (crunch their size down weight wise).

One trick used by many experienced webmasters is to offer a thumbnail of an image, such as a product, with a link to the larger image for a better view. This way the page will load faster for initial view, and if they want more detail, the link will provide that. It is generally understood a link to view a larger image takes longer to download and view.
