Posted: Fri Nov 26, 2004 9:15 pm Post subject: Why can't I find any of Martell's sites when using Google?
I bought Martell's ebook and am working thru it.
Of course instead of writing my content like I should, I thought I would experiment a bit.
I am having trouble finding any of Martell's known topics (except cell phones) to come up in the top ten of any search engine (not just google). I know recently he was 'demoted' in the Google search but shouldn't I find good site placement in Yahoo?
Was there a time where more than one of his topics ranked high in Google or Yahoo?
Your question is a good one. Where is the proof? Fame can be a double-edged sword. James has stopped publicizing his sites because of a number of reasons. Often, he has to deal with people stealing his content and mirroring his sites.
Regarding searching, James has often maintained that the majority of his traffic comes through his articles and not the home page or product pages. This is a result of how he structures his sites.
On the topic of Yahoo! placement, James spells out in his manual that he optimizes sites specifically for Google and not Yahoo!. Often times there is only 10% or 20% commonality between the Google and Yahoo! top 10 results for a given search. Try a search on 'cheap web hosting' in Google and Yahoo! and you will see.
James 'was' and still is getting ranked highly for keywords in Google and Yahoo!. In fact, in the latest 2 editions of the Buzz, he mentioned how things have never been so good. Since he relies only on free search engine traffic, one has to assume he is also getting great rankings too.
fyi: I have only 1 James style web site (I know shame on me, only 1). I am still not in Google but I am getting top 10 and top 20 listings for my article pages in Yahoo! so it does work. As an example, searching on 'juice extractor recipes' in Yahoo! returns my site as #6.
Hope that helps.

Martell never said his primary home page ranked well, it's the multitude of lower tiered pages that rank well ... you would have to go into his sites, deeply and check out those keyphrases against the SERPS.
Basically, it's a numbers game the more pages, the more defined and niche the keyphrases are, the better opportunity for ranking well.

Another thing to consider is the fact that many of James's students (including myself) get a majority of search engine traffic for obscure words that show up in articles, but that arn't necessarily being targeted.
For example, if you have an article for the very competitive keyword of "dog training", you probably won't get much traffic from that keyword search.
However, if in that article you have the word "baby dalmation", you may find you receive traffic from people who search for "baby dalmation dog training".
I have several keywords that I am targeting using james methods in the top 10 at both google and yahoo, however, I get the most traffic from obscure search phrases.
This is why the more content you have, the more likely someone is to find you.

At one time, James mentioned that he had 25,000 pages. That gives him an enormous number of phrases for which he can be found in search engines. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Greg you hit on exactly how I get most of my new traffic, too. I'm in a totally different niche, fly fishing. My top keywords generally produce about 150-250 visitors a month. I get hits from about 10,000 obscure one-hit-per-keyword searches. I didn't really plan it that way--I wrote the content for content's sake and then decided to start trying to make some money. But it worked beautifully. _________________ Jason Neuswanger, Trout Nut
