It depends on the niche. And don't make all of your sites the same article length and same number of articles; it's a pattern and Google is great and detecting them when it comes to penalizing sites.
MSN actually released a paper where they determined that sites with approximately the same number of words on most pages across a site were primarily spam results.

The other thing to consider which will bring more traffic to your site is not about the articles "on your site" ... but rather get some of your articles published in directories etc ... with links to your site ... this will bring you traffic in to your site ... _________________ Kind Regards,
