I bot a site that is a mangle of HTML, JavaScript, .htaccess directives, PHP and includes (local and remote).

It has a PR4, so just tossing the existing site map is probably not a good idea. On the other hand it feels like the mess is holding the site back.

I have thought about reworking this using Smarty Templates.

What would you do?

One idea might be to recreate the site structure and just have a standard redirect of all 404s to the home page. It might not go to the page the person is looking for, but at least it would go somewhere in the same site. It might slow down the current traffic temporarily, but once it got going again it might be worth it to have a more functional site. I'm also thinking that submitting a Google site map of the new structure might help G relearn the site and recover your traffic. Much depends how many inbound links you have too.

There's another way to go about this. There's a technical challenge involved but Google will not drop one single piece of indexed information.

First, for all of the existing content, you will want to send the client a 301 Permanently Moved header with the new location of the document that was being requested. Google acknowledges this as a valid server response and will update its index accordingly.

Second, update your CMS or your site structure (however you're doing it) to create a new site layout.

There might be a lot of note-taking involved as you map out the relations between the old file locations and the file new locations.

While you're at it, you might want to rework all of the URLs in your site to provide more candy for the GoogleBots. For example, Google prefers http://www.example.com/articles/this-is-an-article-title-05416.html to http://www.example.com/articles.php?id=05416. It helps search engine users find the information that they need, because Google will have evidence to suggest that these keywords are important to the document.

If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me. I can offer a few more suggestions if you're stuck on anything.

Thanks,
Jeff

Do you think there is any advantage to changing over from simple ssi includes to php?

Concerning redirects, SSI's won't do what danieltoomey needs, AFAIK. Either it will need to be done with a script or by hand, for each instance.

If you're asking whether PHP would be better than SSI's for whatever he's doing for his site, then I don't know. That depends on what he's trying to do Smile

No, I suppose I was a tad off topic. I was actually asking because I have an old site done in ssi's and I was curious.
