Well pinging blog is just letting blog directories to know that you have updated your blog ...
now i have few questions regarding it as follows .
1.does not blog directories update news posts automatically like SE's do
2. Does these blog directories have enough traffic? Does peoples really visit blog directories to search for there Favorite blog ( i personally never did it ).
3. What are the main advantages of pinging
4.Does softwares/websites (for example pingoat) automatic submitting to multiple blog directories may bring good traffic to my blog or manual pinging is preffered
5. what are the top directories where i should ping my blog ?

I will answer to some of your question only:
1. No, that's why you need to ping everytime
2. Yes, see technorati.com it has a lot of traffic
3. The main advantage is that your blog will appear in the directories, and you can gain traffic when people search for your subject.
4. You can use pingoat.com, and it will submit to multiples directories.
5. technorati.com (Don't forget to tag your posts), and check the list on pingoat too.
P.S: If you have a wordpress blog, it will ping Pingomatic.com automatically after you publish your post.
